I’m wondering if anyone out there has filed bankruptcy on their own without an attorney? If so, what was it like? Was it hard or something an educated person like me could do?

I had to file once upon a time. If you are fairly comfortable with filling out paper work, and your bankruptcy is not too difficult, then it can be fairly easy. I would definately go to the library and do some research. Also, check the website of the local bankruptcy court for any procedures you will need to know (it can vary)
One thing – you will have to take a financial education class. Some of these can be done online. You also want to get all your creditors information, and how much you owe to them.
If you run into any problems, see if a paralegal can assist you before you go to a lawyer.
Good luck.

I was helping my mother-in-law file on her own. I just went to a few websites and contacted my local legal aide office and they gave me the basics of what is needed. You can print all of the forms you will need online. Also, you can send the letters to all of your creditors yourself and pay the bankruptcy court to execute the stay on your behalf until the court date, of which will be set when the stay is executed. It isn’t an easy task, but it is do able for anyone who has basic knowledge of what’s to be done…
These are some of the sites to help.

These are just a few, try google.com and there are more to choose from.
Hope this helps

You can do it on your own. But, it really depends on the chapter you are filing. There are some rules in bankruptcy that if you do not know can come back to haunt you down the road.
